Set of ivory travelling cutlery, 1920 - 1925
Scope and Contents
A set of ivory travelling cutlery from Tanganyika designed during the early 1920s. It belonged to Dr James Van Derwent, a Colonial Medical Officer, who served at Songea. It comprises a mustard pot, egg cup, salt cellar, fork, spoon and small knife, as well as a lady’s card case, pen-holder and comb. The case contains a printed calling card, on which is hand-written ‘Am ready when you are free’, on one side and printed ‘Dr Jas. Van Derwent, Col[onial] Medical Service, Tanganyika Territory’ on the other.
