German East Africa, 1900s

 Fonds
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y30469A

Scope and Contents

An album containing amateur prints of indifferent quality and a few commercial postcards. Its main interest is as a record of domestic life in a white family in German East Africa during the first decade of the twentieth century. The family was apparently based at Amani and may have been named Unger (see prints 115 and 116). There are hand-written captions on the backs of some of the photographs and these have been used as the basis of the following captions. However, the writing is hard to read and a more thorough study would expand the available information. While the vast majority of the prints are images of Tanzania, the album also contains a postcard from India and two photographs of Portugal.
