Scope and Contents A half length seated studio portrait of John Fairbairn (1794-1864), Cape journalist and politician. Born in Roxburghshire and educated at Edinburgh University, Fairbairn came to Cape Town in 1823 to open a school with Thomas Pringle. This project was not successful and in 1824 he became the first editor (with Pringle) of the short-lived ‘South African Journal’. From 1824-1859 he edited the ‘South African Commercial Advertiser’ and was a campaigner in the causes of a free press and...

A brother of professor Roderick Noble, he arrived in Cape Town in 1857 and worked as a journalist on the newly founded Cape Argus. From 1865-97 he served as a clerk to the house of Assembly and was the editor of The Cape Monthly Magazine from 1875-79. 139 x 69 mm. A view looking along the shore of Kalk Bay, with fingers of rock reaching out into the sea and a headland in the distance. The reference to Miss Ogilvie is unclear, but presumably the view was taken from or near her house. A note in C.W. Busk's hand adds: 'Miss Ogilvie, afterwards Mrs. Philpot, was the sister of Canon Ogilvie (Gog), Head Master Dio: Coll. [Diocesan College at Rondebosch]'.
