Herschel, Claremont. Residence of C.J. Busk Esq, 1865

Scope and Contents 140 x 122 mm. A view of the verandahed house from the garden. The astronomer John Herschel (1792-1871) spent the years 1834-8 in the Cape, carrying out important work in the mapping of the stars of the southern hemisphere. During this period the Herschel family lived in an old Cape Dutch farmhouse called 'Feldhausen' in Claremont, which was purchased from one V.A. Schomberg in 1835. Schomberg was later permitted to build a house on one corner of the estate and this was named 'Herschel'. ...

The captions have been recorded as found and may contain offensive, inappropriate or outdated terms. The prints are grainy with high contrast. Consequently, the images are listed rather than described in detail, although occasional notes and cross-references on points of interest have been added. A seated, three-quarter length studio portrait of Sir Philip Edmond Wodehouse (1811-1887), Governor of the Cape 1852-1870. Wodehouse's career started as a writer in Ceylon [Sri Lanka] in 1828 where he served until 1850. During 1851-1854 he was Superintendent in British Honduras and Governor of British Guiana during 1854-1861. After leaving the Cape he was Governor of Bombay 1872-1877.

His Royal Highness Prince Alfred, 1861

A photographic copy of a lithograph showing Prince Alfred Ernest Albert (1844-1900) standing against a background of cliffs. Educated for the Navy, Prince Alfred was commissioned into the ‘Euryalus’ in 1858 and while serving on the ship visited South Africa in 1860. During 1867-1871 he made a world cruise aboard ‘Galatea’ and commanded the Channel Squadron from 1883-1884. He was Commander-in-Chief in the Mediterranean from 1887-89 and at Devonport from 1890-1893.

Scope and Contents A half length seated studio portrait of Eldred Mowbray Cole (1811-?1876). Cole was educated at Westminster and commissioned into the Royal Irish Fusiliers (87th Foot) in 1828, serving with them in Ireland and Mauritius until 1836. He arrived at the Cape in 1838 intending to farm but lost most of his stock in a fire in Port Elizabeth. He was Civil Commissioner in Somerset East for a period in the mid 1840s and Tambrookie Commissioner from 1847-1849, taking up the Civil Commissionership and...

Hon. Harry Rivers, 1859

A half length studio portrait showing Rivers seated in an armchair. Rivers (1785-1861) entered the home civil service of the East India Company in 1808 and came to the Cape in 1816 as acting Wharfmaster of Table Bay. He served as Landdrost of the Albany District 1821-1825 in which year he was relieved from his post and transferred to Swellendam. He was appointed Treasurer of Cape Colony in 1842 and Paymaster General in 1851.

Hon. Rawson W. Rawson C.B., 1859

A half length studio portrait of Rawson seated at a table. Rawson (1812-1899) started his career as a junior clerk in the Board of Trade becoming President 1841-1842. From 1842-1844 he was Chief Secretary in Canada and from 1844-1854 Treasurer and Paymaster in Mauritius. He served in the Cape as Colonial Secretary from 1854-1864 and was Governor of the Bahamas 1864-1869 and of the Windward Islands 1869-1875. Photograph probably by Frederick York.

A half length studio portrait. Porter (1805-1880) was called to the Irish Bar in 1831 and practiced there before becoming Attorney General at the Cape 1839-1866. He was on sick leave 1862-1864. He served on the Legislative Assembly 1869-1872 and left the Cape in the following year.
