The Cape Monthly Magazine was first published in 1857. In 1859, under new editorship, it began to include actual photographic prints inserted with accompanying text, and it appears to be the first publication in South Africa illustrated by this method. The earlier subjects were portraits taken by Frederick Arlington Viler York (1823-1903), but he left South Africa in April 1861 and the illustrations thereafter were by other photographers, including Arthur Green (1832-1873) to whom York sold his business. The latter photographs include scenes as well as portraits. The magazine ceased publication in 1862, and when it was revived in 1870, it did not include photographs.
