Many photos do not appear in the exact numerical order given in the listing. The rest of the images are uncaptioned, but their general locations have been identified by reference to the diary RCMS 353/1.

Scope and Contents The collection includes transcripts of seven letters, which Kendall wrote to his mother describing his experience during Franklin’s second Artic expedition. They are dated between 15 March 1825 and 18 January 1827. There is also a transcript of another letter, dated 12 Dec. 1829, which was written at Cape Town and relates Kendall’s impressions of the city and colony. Apperley was commissioned Cornet in the Bengal Cavalry in 1823 and appointed an assistant at the Hissar Stud in 1838. From 1840-1843 and 1845-1852 he was in charge of the Poosah Stud in Bihar, the period 1834-1845 being spent purchasing horses in Australia. A half length seated studio portrait of Sir Robert Henry Wynyard in uniform. Wynyard (1802-1864) was commissioned as an ensign into the 58th Foot in 1819 and later served in Māori War of 1845-47. He was stationed in Australia 1847-1851 and again in New Zealand from 1851-1858 (Lieutenant Governor, New Ulster Province 1851-1853). From 1859-1863 he was Lieutenant Governor of the Cape.
