Lieutenant Colonel Apperley, Late Indian Remount Agent at the Cape of Good Hope, 1860
Scope and Contents
A half length, seated studio portrait of Lieutenant Colonel William Wynne Apperley (1808-1870), Indian Remount Agent at the Cape 1857-1860 (resident at Cape 1858-1859). Apperley was commissioned Cornet in the Bengal Cavalry in 1823 and appointed an assistant at the Hissar Stud in 1838. From 1840-1843 and 1845-1852 he was in charge of the Poosah Stud in Bihar, the period 1834-1845 being spent purchasing horses in Australia. From 1854-1855 he superintended the central division of the stud in Bengal.
