Three satirical nineteenth-century cartoons concerning New South Wales, Australia, by unknown artists. There is an accompanying letter from [Rex Rienis] to D.H. Simpson, R.C.S. Librarian, 29 May 1968, describing the first two items.

Australian natural history paintings, 1900 - 1930

Scope and Contents Fifty-three undated watercolours intended as bookmarks, each 200 x 45 mm in size, sold by John Sands of Sydney as indicated by stickers pasted onto the reverse. The images are of birds, with the exception of two koala bears, two kangaroos and one opossum. The vast majority are the work of three authors, signed Artah, M. Simpson and Koddi. Artah is Violet Artah Bartlett, an artist specialising in Australian ornithology who worked in Sydney during the 1920s. It has proved impossible as yet...

Bank of Australasia, corner of George Street North and Jamieson Street, 1870 - 1879

266 x 216 mm. View looking across George Street towards the east façade of the Bank of Australasia, designed in classical style by Edmund Blacket in 1857-58. The Jamieson Street corner is in the left foreground. The building is of three storeys and five bays, with a rusticated ground floor and quoins, and with pediments above the arched windows on the first floor. The premises of George Loxton and Co. (? printers), can be seen to the north towards the junction with Charlotte Place.

In the right foreground at 295 Sussex Street, at the junction with Bathurst Street, is the independent Methodist Chapel, a two storey brick building with stepped gables facing onto Bathurst Street. Further down the street is the small Kerosene Oil Depot.

Scope and Contents 'Political sketches by B.B no. 3'. The cartoon dates from around the same period as RCMS 278/65/1, and may be by Benjamin Bailey, an obscure printer of the time. It satirises the agitation by residents of the Port Phillip District (now Victoria) for separation from New South Wales. New South Wales is depicted as a convict crone, with Hyde Park barracks in the background. The figures on the left are three of the six representatives of Port Phillip on the N.S.W.
