The Gap, Sydney Heads, 1870 - 1880

206 x 155 mm. A view looking down on the small collection of houses grouped near the edge of the cliff at the gap, a fissure in the cliffs situated midway between Outer South Head and Inner South Head. The cliffs at North Head can be seen in the distance on the other side of the harbour.

[The Garden Palace before the Fire], 1882

280 x 230 mm. A view of the building from the roof of Government House and looking south towards the Garden Palace. A cruciform building 800 ft. long, with towers at the corners and a central dome 100 ft. in diameter, which collapsed in the fire 'with a crash like a peal of thunder'.

The Grand Arch, Jenolan Caves, 1911

The caves, a popular tourist spot since the 1860's, and situated 115 miles by road west of Sydney, were originally reached via Oberon, but in 1868 the railway reached Mount Victoria, and from there passengers walked. The road down to the caves, known as the 'Five Mile' was completed around 1887 as far as the Great Arch. In 1896 the road through the arch was completed. The photograph shows a car on the road having just come through the large rock tunnel.

The Hotel, Mount Kosciusko, New South Wales, 1909

350 x 274 mm. A snow scene with skiers in the foreground, with the hotel behind and halfway up the hillside. The opening of Kosciusko as a ski resort was directly due to the work of the famous Sydney photographer Charles Kerry, who in the winter of 1897 led a party from Jindabyne to the summit of Mt. Kosciusko, which in turn led to the building of the hotel and roads.

The Jenolan Caves, New South Wales, 1909

350 x 247 mm. A view in the cave, showing rock formations called 'The Willows', with steps carved out of the stone. A highly spectacular complex of caves situated 70 miles west of Sydney, it has been popular with visitors since the 1860s and a large new cave was found as late as 1953.

A view of this sturdy iron bridge, resting on stone supports, which crosses the Nepean on the main Southern Line: '... a fine tubular bridge, the rails being 63 feet above the ordinary level of the river. This bridge and the adjacent viaduct consists of 'wrought iron, continuous box girders for a double line 498 feet in length, ... resting on stone piers, the masonry being set in Portland cement'.
