The Menangle Bridge, 1887

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y3086E/15

Scope and Contents

345 x 261 mm. A view of this sturdy iron bridge, resting on stone supports, which crosses the Nepean on the main Southern Line: '... a fine tubular bridge, the rails being 63 feet above the ordinary level of the river. This bridge and the adjacent viaduct consists of 'wrought iron, continuous box girders for a double line 498 feet in length, ... resting on stone piers, the masonry being set in Portland cement'. (NSW Registrar-General's Office 1886, pages 83-84).

This was the first iron bridge to be built in the colony, the components being shipped out from England ready for assembly. The bridge was completed in July 1863, after a delay caused by the wreck of one of the ships carrying the ironwork. The bridge, with some modifications, was still carrying main-line rail traffic in 1955 - the centenary of the New South Wales railway system.
