The Grand Arch, Jenolan Caves, 1911
Scope and Contents
The caves, a popular tourist spot since the 1860's, and situated 115 miles by road west of Sydney, were originally reached via Oberon, but in 1868 the railway reached Mount Victoria, and from there passengers walked. The road down to the caves, known as the 'Five Mile' was completed around 1887 as far as the Great Arch. In 1896 the road through the arch was completed. The photograph shows a car on the road having just come through the large rock tunnel.
