News Cuttings, 1950 - 1955
Items include news cuttings recording the marriage of Sir Harold and Lady Smedley (1950); their period in Rhodesia (1951-53) and posting to India (March 1957-58); photographs of Smedley with Sir Roy Price (1950), Lord Swinton (1953) and Alec Douglas-Home (1956); postcards and travel literature (1950); Smedley’s MBE certificate (1953); news cuttings of the Queen Mother’s visit to Bulawayo (1953); and several cards and letters including a Christmas card from Alec Douglas-Home (1955).
Newscuttings on Africa and South East Asia
The principal part of the collection is a set of thirteen scrapbooks of newscuttings relating to East Africa, particularly Kenya and Tanganyika. The rest of the collection consists of a volume of cuttings relating to post-war trading opportunities in Nigeria and three scrapbooks concerning rubber and mining in South East Asia.

The rest of the images are uncaptioned, but their general locations have been identified by reference to the diary RCMS 353/1.

Archives relating to a mission to South Africa, Rhodesia, Australia, New Zealand and Canada undertaken by Sir Henry Rider Haggard on behalf of the RCI to investigate possibilities of post WWI settlement of ex-servicemen. Haggard's report was published as 'The After-War Settlement & Employment of Ex-Service Men in the Overseas Dominions' in 1916.
