Biographical / Historical
Edward Arthur Maund (1851-1932) was educated at St John's College, Hurstpierpoint, where he was Assistant Master, 1872-1873, and matriculated at Peterhouse College, Cambridge, in 1873. He emigrated to South Africa, where he was involved with the establishment of British settlement in Rhodesia. He served under Sir Charles Warren in Bechuanaland, 1884, and Mashonaland, 1889-1896. He died on 17 March 1932 in London.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The prints were taken from originals collected by Dr J.G. Gubbins in 1932 in his attempts to restore the Library of the University of the Witwatersrand, which had been destroyed by fire that year. They were presented to the R.C.S. by the University of the Witwatersrand Library Appeal Committee, 1933.
