Scope and Contents From the Fonds: A collection of glass lantern slides, 82 x 82 mm, mostly of Samoa, taken by John Snowden Smithson. Smithson visited Samoa on holiday and presumably the remaining slides (5 of them unidentified, 13 of Yosemite National Park and 10 of Ceylon), together with a map, date from the same period. None of the slides are captioned, but the first 91 slides have numbers on their left hand corners, running from 20/10 to 30/9, with a few gaps, and presumably represent the sequence in which the...

Caisson for Breakwater head foundation Sept 1883, 1883-09

The photographs are either captioned on the prints or more briefly on the mounts (with the exception of Y3062B/16 which is uncaptioned).The only two identified photographers in the album are both from the Canadian section:1-4, ?10 and 11-14 are signed by Alexander Henderson and 1-2 are also dated '1875'. Henderson (1831-1913) emigrated from Scotland to Montreal in 1855...

Scope and Contents 213 x 270 mm. View of one of the dwarpals, or door guardians, which stand at the main entrance to the Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth) at Anuradhapura. This stone slab, with a sigmoid top similar in shape to an English graveyard headstone, is carved in deep relief with a full length figure flanked by two dwarf-like attendants. The Dalada Maligawa stands within the precincts of the Thuparama Dapada and was built to enshrine the left canina of Buddha which was brought to Ceylon in 311...
