Silk cushion cover, 1901 - 1902

The cover incorporates the colours of the Boer flag and features a farmer, a lion, an eagle, an anchor and a wagon. It is likely that the compiler of the album acquired this curious object during his service at Vryheid.

With two sailing boats moored in the bay and wooden frameworks (?for drying fishing nets) in the foreground. A note on the reverse in C.W. 213 x 154 mm. A view from the shore looking down onto Simon's Bay which is crowded with craft of various sizes at anchor. HMS Powerful, a twin funnelled cruiser, lies at anchor in the centre of the shipping. The date of Powerful's visit to Simon's Town has not been established but this photograph was possibly taken during the Boer War: if so, the large ship at anchor at the right is possibly one of the vessels used for a time as a Boer prisoner of war rest camp.

Built by the authority of Sir Lowry Cole during his term as Governer of the Cape, 1828-33, in order to shorten the route to Cape Town from farms east of the range, it was bitterly criticised for its cost, but with the introduction of a toll system it in fact proved to be a lucrative source of revenue.
