Sir John Wylde, Knt. LL.D., 1859
Scope and Contents
Photographic copy of a half length portrait of Sir John Wylde (1781-1859), Chief Justice of Cape Colony 1827-55. Photograph by Frederick York: 'The portrait of Sir John Wylde is photographed from the oil painting taken by Sir Martin Shee, in 1827. The original was one of the most successful portraits ever painted by that distinguished master. It is unfortunately, however, by no means well adapted for photographic copying; and all that the photographer has been able to render with tolerable fidelity are merely the features and expression of the countenance'.
