Scope and Contents A photographic copy of an engraving of Thomas Pringle (1789-1834) the Scottish poet, journalist and philanthropist. Pringle was a co-editor of the ‘Edinburgh Monthly Magazine’ from 1817-19 and spent the years between 1820-1826 at the Cape where he was connected with John Fairbairn (see Y3059F/5) in various enterprises. From 1822-24 he was Parliamentary Librarian and on his return to England became secretary of the Anti-Slavery Society in 1827. His ‘African Sketches’ (London 1834) contains...

[Tomb of President Paulus Kruger in Pretoria], 1900 - 1910

152 x 205 mm. Showing the grave of President Kruger in the old cenetry at Pretoria, consisting of a massive black marble tombstone topped by a white bust of him (1825-1904). To the left of his grave, in the same plot, is the tomb of his second wife Gezina Susanna Frederika Wilhelmina Du Plessis (1831-1901) whom he had married in 1847. Kruger died in Switzerland and was embalmed and temporarily laid in a vault beoire finally being moved to Pretoria.
