A memorial volume, compiled by J.P. MacKinnon and Sydney Shadbolt, containing sixty-one Woodbury types of head and shoulders portraits (mainly in uniform) of officers killed during the Zulu War. The oval prints, taken by a variety of photographers, measure 91 x 113 mm.

Hepple had intended to revise the memoir and expand the last section, which deals with his years as leader of the South African Labour Party, but it remained uncompleted at his death, and has received only minor editing. The volume includes an appendix providing a full list of Hepple's parliamentary speeches, books, pamphlets and articles.

Rev. John Smith Moffat had left the LMS in 1879 and was at this time the British Representative in Matabeleland. Sir Sidney Shippard was the Administrator of British Bechuanaland. The Civil Commissioner and Resident Magistrate at Mafeking from 1890-2 was A.G. Hatchard. Also identified (beneath the following plate)...
