Treaty of Ulundi pen, 1879
This pen was used by Zulu leaders at their capital Ulundi on 1 September 1879 to sign the treaty which concluded the Anglo-Zulu War. The ceremony began with an address by Sir Garnet Wolseley, Governor and High Commissioner in South Africa, setting out the terms. An original caption accompanying the pen reads, ‘The wooden holder was sharpened, dipped in ink and each chief’s hand was guided by Mr. John Shepstone [who acted as translator].’

A collection of high quality photographs, measuring 210 x 160 mm, mounted on black album sheets. They are uncaptioned but most have been identified from books on the Cape and on South African architecture; 25-31 are almost certainly photographs of Zulu peoples; the remainder are less clearly identified. Photographer unknown.
Tribal dancing at Johannesburg gold mine, 1967-10
This group of Kodachromes shows Africans dancing in what is clearly the same spot. No 6 is marked 'Mine dancing Durban Deep' and no 13 'Tribal dancing at Johannesburg gold mine.' Presumably, despite its name, Durban Deep is in Johannesburg. Nos 11 and 12 are captioned 'Gumboot dance' but the other slides are merely marked 'MD' without further details.

A series of watercolours commissioned from the Rhodesian artist Mrs Gilbert Stephenson to be used in colouring lantern slides to illustrate the fifth handbook, A.J. Sargent, 'South Africa: seven lectures (London, 1914). Stephenson had been recommended by the British South Africa Company.

The series includes a wide range of pictures, portraits and photographs. Titles and captions have been recorded as found and may contain offensive, inappropriate or outdated terms. The items are undated, but probably originate from between the 1960s and 1980s.

Tunnel and cogwheel section Waterval Onder end, I.M.Ry Transvl., 1900 - 1910
206 x 148 mm. A view looking down on a curving section of track climbing the side of a steep hill on the Laurenco Marques line near Waterval Onder. The tunnel in the sheer cliff face can be seen in the background. The line here features a central rack meshed into cogs on the underside of the locomotive to provide purchase on the steep gradient. The only rack railway in South Africa, it became obsolete with the advent of more powerful engines.
