207 x 149 mm. A view looking across a small ornamental lake towards two of the university buildings, the original building being on the right. One of the oldest Melbourne buildings, it was completed in the 1850s, with external walls of Victorian Bluestone, and faced with Hobart freestone.

Menzies Hotel, 1870 - 1880

183 x 128 mm. A view of the hotel, which stands at the junction between William Street and Bourke Street. Menzies Hotel, Melbourne, 1885 - 1901

200 x 149 mm. A view of the hotel which stands on the junction between William Street and Bourke Street, with a tower, in renaissance style, at one corner. Situated in the far west of New South Wales, on the Barrier Range, the area was the subject of a gold rush in 1867. No gold was found and it was not until 1875 that it was discovered that the area contained enormous reserves of extremely concentrated silver lead ore. Two undated pencil and watercolour sketches. The first is of a group of diggers by a stream with hills on either side and a tall hill in the background. It is marked in pencil 'outhern diggins' (the start of the word is trimmed off) and 'Browne'. The second picture is of a party of men with pack animals moving along a path with hill slopes in the background. It is marked in pencil 'Diggings' and 'Browne'.

Scope and Contents From the Sub-Fonds: Fifty-three undated watercolours intended as bookmarks, each 200 x 45 mm in size, sold by John Sands of Sydney as indicated by stickers pasted onto the reverse. The images are of birds, with the exception of two koala bears, two kangaroos and one opossum. The vast majority are the work of three authors, signed Artah, M. Simpson and Koddi. Artah is Violet Artah Bartlett, an artist specialising in Australian ornithology who worked in Sydney during the 1920s. It has proved impossible as yet...
