The Botanical Gardens are situated on the slopes of a gully leading down to the Yarra River, near the grounds of Government House. They came into existence in 1846, when John Arthur, the first superintendent laid out a five acre paddock.

The text below the picture reads ‘These public gardens were first promoted by the Sandhurst Corporation in the year 1865. They cover an area of about 30 acres, and contain many choice and rare plants. The public are admitted every day in the week, from the hours of sunrise to sunset. Mr. Gadd is the curator and resides in the gardens.
