364 x 257 mm. A view of the Government Building on Lambton Quay with three figures standing in the roadway in front. This is the handsome building which superseded the offices shown in Y3089B/27. Finished around 1876 (to the design of W.H. Clayton), it is a wooden structure looking deceptively like stone. The chimneys seen here were later removed in the interests of architectural harmony.

184 x 133 mm. A view looking across the Yarra towards the Domain, on the skyline of which can be seen Government House. Said to have been inspired by Osborne House, the building is Italianate in style, with a square central tower. The house was built between 1872-6.

A view of the State Governor’s residence in the Domain, a building Italianate in style, with a square tower on one corner of the main building, and reputed to be derived from Osborne House in the Isle of Wight. The building was designed in the Public Works Office when W.W. Wardell was in charge, and was built between 1872-1876.

281 x 223 mm. A view looking down on to the wooded garden of the Domain with the fine structure of Government House set among trees. A restrained and attractive building, more in the style of the eighteenth than the nineteenth century, it was designed by William Mason and completed in 1856. It took over from the first Government House, a wooden building which burnt down in 1848.

This is the second Government House, designed by William Mason in 1856 to replace the first residence which burnt down in 1848.
