Vaughan became photo lithographer for the Survey Department in 1892 and although it is unlikely that he was also the photographer it indicates that the work was done on behalf of a Government department. Additional information on the caption states: ‘This bridge carries the Addington and Kowai Railway over the River Waimakariri, in the provincial district of Canterbury. The bridge has a total length of 627 feet, made up of 19 spans of 33 feet each. The contract was let on the 21st April, 1871, and the work completed on the 16th November of the same year, at a cost of £4,400’.
