Scope and Contents

243 x 182 mm. Showing King David Kalakaua (1836-1891) and his sister Liliuokalani (1838-1917) standing in front of the obelisk erected near the spot at which Captain Cook was killed in 1779. The caption reads 'This is a visit by the King and Queen of Honolulu to Captn. Cook's monument at the island of Hawaii which is governed and owned by Honolulu. The King is the big man in white in front leaning on the gun, the woman on the other side is his sister. The next man his the King's Secretary and the next woman with the parasol is the Queen, but I must tell you she is not the reigning Queen, for since the King's death, his sister [viz. Liluokalani] is the reigning Queen. All the others are courtiers and servants'.
