Scope and Contents One of the sisters of the Bafut Chief wearing her leopard skin girdle denoting her Royal connection and her necklaces of unglazed porcelain German beads. The leopard skin is the royal insignia throughout the whole Bamenda Division and nobody is allowed to have one except the Chiefs. Sister Teresa was at the Convent in Dilling, five days march south of El Obeid and was captured by Mahdist forces under Mek Omar in September 1882. During her captivity in Omdurman, the Khalifa ordered that all women should be married. Measuring 205 x 265 mm, this album contains 48 sepia photographs, each measuring 145 x 90 mm, two to a page, together with 22 loose prints of France and North Africa. The album prints have brief captions, and since they relate to Algiers, Biskra and a few of Tunis and Carthage, they may come from the same visit as Y304H.

The caption reads, 'On the right hand is the Convent Laarger [Laager] in which the foot volunteers were quartered. The centre camp was the head quarters of the Garrison under Colonel Gilde. On the left hand in the corner was the Civil Camp for the townspeople. The long brick buildings in the centre of the sketch were for ladies.'

Scope and Contents

Frome created a series of sketchbooks of various formats during his travels. Numbers 1 (Canada) and 4-5 (Mauritius) were missing when the collection came to Cambridge. The RCS sold numbers 2-3 (Australia) to the Art Gallery of South Australia in 1970. Numbers 6-7 and 11 had never been presented to the society. The great majority of the contents of the seven sketchbooks listed below had been removed in London, leaving only a few rough pieces.

The majority of these were taken in the north of the province; at Magoebaskoof (two visits); Tzaneen (including a sequence showing sisal growing and processing); Vendaland in the extreme north and a few coming south to Orhigstad and Graskop. A group taken at Mala Mala camp is assumed to be in the Transvaal, though the precise location has not been found. The section concludes with a visit to a fishing lodge at Dulstroom in December 1969.
