Collection of black and white press agency and official photographs (including 5 duplicates) relating to developments during 1965-80, from the time of Rhodesia's unilateral declaration of Independence (UDI) until the emergence of the republic of Zimbabwe. Many were collected to illustrate articles in 'Commonwealth in Focus', and some were reproduced in the 'Commonwealth in Focus' exhibition 1982. The captions have been used as titles and have been recorded as found.

147 x 104 mm. Showing Sir Apolo Kagwa and his wife seated outside the Katikiro's house with four children. Sir Apolo (knighted in 1905) became Omuwanika (Treasurer of Buganda) in 1887 and in the following years also led Mwanga's army in campaigns against Karema. From 1897-1914 he was Chief Regent to the young Daudi Chwa and from 1914-1926 was Katikiro or Prime Minister of Buganda.

Sir Charles Cust took this collection of amateur photographs while accompanying the Royal Party. A collection of albums containing prints. They are presentation albums from Nigerian States, recording events during official visits 1971-74 when he was British High Commissioner in Nigeria, and are presumably the work of official photographers. Albums G, H and J have the Nigerian flag as the cover design, and F, H-J have the State arms on the cover. A few of the prints have been removed from the albums and this has been noted in the catalogue.

Sir George Grey, 1859

Scope and Contents

A half length studio portrait of Grey seating resting an arm on a table. Grey (1812-1898) was commissioned into the army in 1829. He made two journeys of exploration in Australia in 1837 and 1839, and was Governor of South Australia 1841-1845; of New Zealand 1846-1854 and 1861-1867; and of the Cape of Good Hope 1854-1861. From 1870-1894 he lived in New Zealand and was Prime Minister 1877-1879. Another copy of this print can be found at Y3011T/10. Photograph probably by Frederick York.
