Sir Cyril Pickard Collection of Nigerian photographs
Scope and Contents
A collection of albums containing prints. They are presentation albums from Nigerian States, recording events during official visits 1971-74 when he was British High Commissioner in Nigeria, and are presumably the work of official photographers. Albums G, H and J have the Nigerian flag as the cover design, and F, H-J have the State arms on the cover. A few of the prints have been removed from the albums and this has been noted in the catalogue.

Biographical / Historical
Cyril Stanley Pickard (born 1917) joined the Home Office in 1939, but served in the Royal Artillery 1940-41 before appointment to posts in the Office of the Secretary of State in Cairo, and with UNRRA. Transferred to the Commonwealth Relations Office in 1948, he held appointments in India, Australia, New Zealand, and Cyprus, before becoming British high Commissioner in Pakistan 1966-71, and Nigeria 1971-74. After his retirement he took an active role in the work of the Royal Commonwealth Society.
