Robert Maddocks Collection

Scope and Contents

Maddocks has written many articles on postal history, the majority reflecting his primary interest in the history of the Cameroons, particularly during the colonial period. He is the author of a monograph examining postal arrangements during the conquest of German Kamerun by the British and French during the First World War. His works also cover Nigeria, West Africa, Gambia, Zambia, German East and South West Africa, Togo, Ascension, St. Helena, Papua New Guinea, Jamaica and Barbados.

Robert Nunez Lyne, 1905

204 x 144 mm. A view showing a European, wearing a white suit and pith helmet seated in a rickshaw drawn by a uniformed Swahili. This is probably a portrait of R.N. Lyne (1864-1961) who was at the time Director of Agriculture in Zanzibar. He subsequently held posts in Mozambique and Ceylon and published, among other works ‘Zanzibar in Contemporary Times’ (1905) and ‘An Apostle of Empire’ (1936), a biography of General Lloyd Matthews.
