'Kiruara - a massacre?'
This is a personal account by Lindsay, who served with the Kenyan police, of what occurred at Kiruara Market on 23 Nov. 1952, when the police opened fire upon Mau Mau demonstrators (8 pages).
Knowles : items found loose in the copy of Knowles' 'The Monastic Order in England' (Cambridge University Press, 1940) (Pet.569.14) presented by him to his father, Harry Herbert Knowles, inscribed 'To my dear Father from his son, 5 July, 1940'.
On his father's death in 1944 Knowles clearly reclaimed the book and in due course bequeathed it to Christopher Nugent Lawrence Brooke (1927-2015) and it was subsequently sold by G. David.
The book, which has been many times reprinted, has sparse annotations, mostly to the index, and, inside the back cover notes of corrections (which found their way into the second edtion of 1963) to seven pages.

Lady Swettenham collection (Malaya and Jamaica)
Photographs by various photographers and three other items. They relate to the career of James Alexander Swettenham, who, after serving in Ceylon and Cyprus, became Colonial Secretary in Singapore in 1895. He was Governor of British Guyana 1901-1904 and of Jamaica 1904-1907. His period in Singapore coincided with the service in Malaya of his more famous brother, Sir Frank Swettenham. Their father was James Oldham Swettenham, Solicitor of Belper.
