 Fonds
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y30325A

Scope and Contents

A collection of photographs assembled by Albert George Clark (b. 1880), a railway tunnel foreman working on the Malay Peninsula [Malaysia] on the construction of tunnels in Kelantan state, forming part of the railway line from Kuala Lipis north to Tumpat. The precise location of the tunnels has not been established, but Clark seems to have been based in or around the town of Kuala Krai. The photographs depict some social scenes, aspects of the tunnel construction and railway construction camps as well as floods in the town of Kuala Krai in 1926. Original captions have been recorded, where available. Identification of A.G. Clark in the photographs was supplied by the donor.

Biographical / Historical

Albert George Clark was born in St Giles, London, in June 1880. He married Alice Harriet Cooper in August 1902 and the couple had three children. Clark worked on the London Underground as a bricklayer and tunnel labourer. During the First World War, it is thought that he served in a tunnelling company, possibly the Royal Engineers. He travelled to India in the 1920s to work on railway construction. It is known that he worked on the construction of tunnels on the Malay Peninsula. He returned to England in April 1931; the passenger list of the 'RMS Ranpura' listed Clark's occupation as tunnel foreman. He died in Ware, Hertfordshire, in August 1944, where he had been the lock-keeper for some years.
