The Beales family papers include the personal letters of Edmond Beales and Eliza Beales (nee Marshall) as well as newspaper clippings providing biographical information on Edmond Beales and the causes in which he was involved, such as the political Reform Movement, Italian independence, and the plight of Polish Refugees.

Comprises research material and photographs gathered by West in studying the Australian administration of Papua and New Guinea, and the careers of Hubert Murray, Lieutenant-Governor of Papua, and his brother, the classicist Gilbert Murray. Also included is West's unpublished memoir which provides much contextual background to his research and publications.
