Professional Correspondence, 1961 - 1975
Scope and Contents
Two boxes containing manuscript and typescript letters, memoranda and postcards addressed to Roger Law, along with a small amount of accompanying material, which mostly concern his professional activities and relationships between 1961 and 1975. There are also copies of letters and memoranda sent by Law to various individuals. Also present are a few letters addressed to Law's wife, Deirdre Amsden.
The first box covers the years 1961 to 1969. Topics include, but are not limited to: Law's work at The Observer newspaper, between 1962 and 1965, which includes the cancellation of the 'Almost the End' satirical page that Law produced with Peter Cook and Michael Frayn; Law's activities with The Sunday Times and The Sunday Times Magazine, from 1964 to 1967; work produced for other British publications; his teaching and other education-based activities at Hornsey College of Art, the North-East Essex Technical College and School of Art, and Somerset College of Art; Law's attempts to generate interest in funding an adult cartoon film, based on his illustrations; work on the books, Synthetic Fun and The Language of the Law; arrangements concerning the six-month artist-in-residence post at the American liberal arts institution, Reed College, which Law assumed in 1968; and Law's attempts to remain in the United States, following the end of his Reed College residency, and the failure of his visa application.
The second box covers the years 1970 to 1975. Topics include, but are not limited to: Law's work at The Sunday Times Magazine, both as an art editor and as a journalist; his submission of illustrations to a number of German publications, including Zeit Magazin and Stern; lecturing and project work at Oxford Polytechnic and Middlesex Polytechnic; and issues over journalist, Hans Gamber, using Law's work without permission. There are also personal letters from artist, Ted Milton, along with ephemeral items connected to Milton's Mr Pugh's Puppet Theatre.

Arrangement
The vast majority of the material in this file were deposited with the library in October 2024, almost a year after the Roger Law (Early Years) sub-fonds had been catalogued. The items received in October 2024 were merged with a small file of professional letters, dating from 1970 to 1975, which originally held the reference number for this catalogue entry.
