Biographical / Historical

The association is a political society reputed to have been formed in 1923. Its main activity is a programme of speaker meetings and discussions to which Members of Parliament, journalists and members of think tanks are invited. It also holds regular debates against the Cambridge University Labour Club and runs, or assists with, political campaigns. Social events have included an annual dance, champagne boat trips, termly chairman's dinners, port and cheese parties, and a trip to Parliament to meet MPs, which is known as the Westminster Tea Party. Previous members who went on to have prominent political careers have included George Geoffrey Gilbert Butler, Cuthbert James McCall Alport, Geoffrey Howe, Douglas Hurd, Kenneth Clarke, Norman Lamont, Michael Howard, and Andrew Mitchell. Further information about the association's activities is on its website: http://www.cuca.org.uk/.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The records were transferred to the University Archives from the Manuscripts Department on 15 January 2008. The bulk of the material was deposited by the Cambridge University Conservative Association with the Manuscripts Department from March to June 1980. The pre 1982 material in section SOC.82.3 was deposited in 1981 by Jonathan Munday (Emmanuel College). Items with a former reference code starting ''Simon Morris'' were deposited circa 1985, presumably by Simon Morris (Gonville and Caius College). He appears to have arranged the contents of these files and written the introductory pages to be found in them. A further tranche of material was deposited in June 2007 by Paul Powlesland (Peterhouse College). All were given the classmark Ms.Add.8279. Accession dates for individual items may be obtained from the University Archives. SOC.82.1.1.3, 3.3.1-2 (addnl), 4.3, 5.2.2 (addnl), 5.5 were deposited by Hugo Hadlow (St John's College) on 27 July 2009. SOC.82.1.2.A-B were deposited by Simon Morris on 31 June 2014. SOC.82.5.1.6 was deposited by Victoria Brown, St John's College, on 5 May 2015.
