Devlin Enquiry report and papers, 1972 - 1973

Scope and Contents

The immediate catalyst for the Devlin Enquiry was the student occupation of the Old Schools, 3-5 February 1972, in protest at the General Board's refusal to liberalise the Economics examination programme. The report surveyed existing measures for student participation in University governance and proposed others, including student representation on University bodies.

The work-in was organised in protest at the introduction of reduced evening opening hours. At closing time on 23rd February, about 200 students occupied the reading rooms and the tea room for several hours. The event passed off peacefully.
