Scope and Contents Writing from the Academic Assistance Council in the Royal Society, Adams sends an agenda for a meeting and writes about the speakers. Austen Chamberlain wants there to be no implication of hostility towards Germany in the speeches and preferably no reference to Germany; Rutherford has also wished to keep the meeting apolitical. The four societies combining in the appeal do not intend the assistance to be solely for refugees from one country as is the case with other societies. No dinner...

Scope and Contents Writing from the Academic Assistance Council in the Royal Society, Adams says that on Thursday of the next week 'The Times' will publish a 1,400 word article about the AAC written by Rutherford but need this by early Tuesday as they may wish to prepare a leader. Due to the hurry Adams has drafted the article and submits this for Rutherford's correction, asking that his secretary would telephone with corrections and alterations so that on Monday evening the final draft can be taken to the...

Scope and Contents In reply to the previous letter [Mark Oliphant] writes to Walter Adams that Oskar Heil is not a Jew and it is not for thar reason he wishes to spend a year in the Cavendish. Heil is of independent means and has been accepted by the Laboratory. Frau [Agnesa Arsenjewa] Heil is Russian and that is the reason for the difficulty with the Home Office. She has applied for a visa and has been refused and [Oliphant] was asked to write to explain the situation to the Home Office. Asks that Adams...

Reference Code: GBR/0012/MS Add.7653/1/A/10
Scope and Contents Rutherford introduces [Mathilde] Hertz, daughter of [Heinrich Hertz], who has some Jewish ancestry and who cannot now live in Germany. As a zoologist 'of standing', Rutherford encloses a letter from Professor [Augustus Daniel] Imms saying he will allow her to work in 'the laboratory' [the Entomological Department of the Rothamsted Experimental Station?]. Letter to Adams, Walter , 30 Apr. 1934

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0012/MS Add.7653/1/A/7
Scope and Contents Rutherford encloses an amended report (in response to the previous letter), which he has signed. Adams's report excellent and explains the alterations he has made. One part he has deleted and substituted with a general phrase due to the undesirability of special reference to institutions or the nature of the work; Rutherford wants to base the appeal on broad grounds of academic liberty. Regretfully he feels that the history of the Hugenot refugees is an unhappy parallel. Other changes...
