With fountain in foreground and house beyond. [The building was constructed circa 1856 to replace the governors former residence at Mount Lavinia (which then became the Mount Lavinia Hotel). The house is surrounded by an eight acre garden and the main entrance is opposite the G.P.O in Queen Street].

Scope and Contents Oil on canvas painting, 102 x 76 cm, commissioned from the marine artist Sidney Fever. It depicts the tea clipper ‘The Tweed’ about to sail from Colombo Harbour on 8 April 1888, where she had called during her voyage from China to New York. Weatherstone meticulously researched the ship and harbour in contemporary plans, prints and photographs to ensure the painting’s authenticity, and his list of sources is filed with the collection. ‘The Tweed’ began life as the armed paddle steamer...

H.M.S. ‘Bacchante’ and ‘Ruby’ are anchored in the harbour within the area enclosed by the breakwater. The two princes remained in Ceylon from 25th January to 6th February 1882.
