Queen’s House, Colombo, 1875
Scope and Contents
203 x 148 mm. View, probably from the clock tower, looking northwards onto Queen’s House, with shipping at anchor on the roadstead beyond. The house, a square two storey affair with verandahs running around the house on both floors and with a main entrance with Port cochere on Queen Street, was the Governor’s residence in Colombo. A colonnade walk leads to other wings (not visible) in the foreground. The house is set in four acres of gardens and was largely rebuilt from an earlier version by Durand Kershaw, Assistant Civil Engineer in 1853-56. For a history of the earlier governors’ residences on the site, see P.M. Bingham, ‘History of Public Works Department, Ceylon, 1796 to 1896’ (3 vols, Colombo 1921-23) vol 2, p 53-54.
