Scope and Contents From the Fonds: A collection of glass lantern slides, 82 x 82 mm, mostly of Samoa, taken by John Snowden Smithson. Smithson visited Samoa on holiday and presumably the remaining slides (5 of them unidentified, 13 of Yosemite National Park and 10 of Ceylon), together with a map, date from the same period. None of the slides are captioned, but the first 91 slides have numbers on their left hand corners, running from 20/10 to 30/9, with a few gaps, and presumably represent the sequence in which the...

248 x 200 mm. View looking down onto the starting point of the breakwater, with a large crowd gathered in front of the open-sided marquee beneath which the foundation stone is suspended. The Prince of Wales has not been positively identified: he may be hidden behind the foundation stone or he may possibly be one of the figures climbing the steps up to the marquee.

197 x 148 mm. General view of the Mount Lavinia Hotel, some seven miles from Colombo. The main part of the hotel stands on a small headland overlooking the ocean with a single storied verandahed building, presumably providing additional accommodation. The main house was a two storey stone building with a balcony originally built for the Governor of Ceylon, Sir Edward Barnes.
