The streets thus narrow and twisting afford shade from the hot sun during most hours of the day. Veiled Arab women are seen in the foreground. Their eastern dress contrasts curiously with their European footwear of latest design.'

Picture shows: His Highness Khalifa 11, the Sultan of Zanzibar photographed in the Baraza or main reception room of the palace, a long narrow room lined with gilt mirrors and furnished with gilt couches upholstered in scarlet plush.'

Built under the supervision of Bishop Steere (Bishop of Zanzibar 1874-1882), the cathedral stands on the site of the last market for enslaved persons in Zanzibar and was completed in 1879.
