Scope and Contents

210 x 160 mm. The caption continues: 'The tall building with the tower - The Beit-el-Ajaib (House of Wonders) was built in 1883 by Seyyid BarGash (Sultan 1870-1888). In the foreground bales of cloves are being loaded into lighters for export. The clove industry of Zanzibar was established during the reign of Seyyid Said Bin Sultan (Ruler of Oman and Zanzibar 1804-1856). Seyyid Said moved his residence from Oman to Zanzibar in 1882. The islands of Zanzibar and Pemba now supply 80% of the world demand for cloves and clove oil.'
