Water colours and pen and ink sketches documenting Anderson's travels in southern Africa, accompanied by his original captions and explanatory notes. 204 x 156 mm. Showing a procession of women, led by a chanting man. The caption on the reverse reads 'The procession is announcing a wedding to the 'Kgotla', or general meeting, of the Tribe. A 'Kgotla' is arranged whenever the Chief wants to talk to adult males and (on occasion) to women and children. The Bakgatla tribe is widespread, mostly in the Transvaal'. A more lengthy caption summarises the physical and human geography of the Bechuanaland Protectorate.

65 x 41 mm. Showing a child holding a small bow and arrow, with a grass hut in the background. Reproduced in Hodson facing p 24, where the location is identified as Kakea Pan. The term Bushmen was used to describe a group of Khoisan-speaking hunter-gatherers who lived in the Kalahari Desert.
