The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: 'One of three mountain fortresses on the peaks of Kyrenia Range, and certainly the most impressive of them all. It is the classic picture-look fairly [sic] castle, overlooking Kyrenia town from a height of 2,200 feet. The earliest historical reference to the Castle is found in chronicles recording Richard Coeur de Lion's conquest. It was originally built by the Byzantines'.
