139 x 69 mm. A view looking across a bay with a settlement on the farther side and a headland beyond. With two sailing boats moored in the bay and wooden frameworks (?for drying fishing nets) in the foreground. A note on the reverse in C.W. Busk's hand adds: 'Don't remember this: think it Simon's Town [i.e. Simonstad]'. This appears to be correct and the headland is similar to those north of the town.

Simon's Bay. The 'Powerful' lying in the distance, 1900

213 x 154 mm. A view from the shore looking down onto Simon's Bay which is crowded with craft of various sizes at anchor. HMS Powerful, a twin funnelled cruiser, lies at anchor in the centre of the shipping. The date of Powerful's visit to Simon's Town has not been established but this photograph was possibly taken during the Boer War: if so, the large ship at anchor at the right is possibly one of the vessels used for a time as a Boer prisoner of war rest camp.

The album, which has the Frere arms on a silver shield on the corner, contains an illuminated address opposite the title page reading:Presented to the Lady Frere by the Reception Committee. Sir George Grey, 1859

Scope and Contents

A half length studio portrait of Grey seating resting an arm on a table. Grey (1812-1898) was commissioned into the army in 1829. He made two journeys of exploration in Australia in 1837 and 1839, and was Governor of South Australia 1841-1845; of New Zealand 1846-1854 and 1861-1867; and of the Cape of Good Hope 1854-1861. From 1870-1894 he lived in New Zealand and was Prime Minister 1877-1879. Another copy of this print can be found at Y3011T/10. Photograph probably by Frederick York.

Scope and Contents 56 x 92 mm. A carte de visite half length, three quarters profile studio portrait of Sir Henry Barkly (1815-1898). Barkly's early years were spent as a sugar broker in his father's business, but with the slump in trade after the abolition of slavery, he decided on a career in politics and entered Parliament as the member for Leominster in 1845. The remainder of his career was spent in a succession of Colonial governorships: British Guiana 1848-53; Jamaica 1853-56; Victoria (Australia)...

Sir Lowry Pass - over the Hottentot [Khoekhoe] Hollands Mountains, Cape, 1925

290 x 241 mm. A view looking along the railway line which follows the Sir Lowry Pass over the mountains east of Cape Town. Built by the authority of Sir Lowry Cole during his term as Governer of the Cape, 1828-33, in order to shorten the route to Cape Town from farms east of the range, it was bitterly criticised for its cost, but with the introduction of a toll system it in fact proved to be a lucrative source of revenue.
