Herschel, Claremont. Residence of C.J. Busk Esq, 1865
Scope and Contents
140 x 122 mm. A view of the verandahed house from the garden. The astronomer John Herschel (1792-1871) spent the years 1834-8 in the Cape, carrying out important work in the mapping of the stars of the southern hemisphere. During this period the Herschel family lived in an old Cape Dutch farmhouse called 'Feldhausen' in Claremont, which was purchased from one V.A. Schomberg in 1835. Schomberg was later permitted to build a house on one corner of the estate and this was named 'Herschel'. It appears that Busk, in the captions to later prints, has confused the two buildings, and the one seen here was not Herschel's own residence, but the later building.
