Scope and Contents 277 x 195 mm. A view from the junction of Farquhar Street and Penang Road showing the wall surrounding the hotel but very little of the buildings themselves. A sign in the right foreground indicates the hotel entrance. The Hotel d'Europe was situated just off Farquhar Street on the northern waterfront. The history of the hotel has not been traced but this appears to be the establishment taken over by the Sarkies Brothers (founders of Raffles Hotel, Singapore) and later named the Eastern...

The Klings (the term has since the turn of the century been considered highly deregoratory) were the Tamil immigrants who formed the lowest classes of labour. 212 x 158 mm. A view looking down, probably from the base of the lighthouse onto the long, single storied wooden building with verandah and tiled roof. Muka is situated at the extreme north-west tip of Penang Island. A photograph probably taken shortly after the completion of these buildings in 1884 (Straits Settlements Blue Book, 1884).

Scope and Contents

These letters are largely a record of Cameron's domestic arrangements and social life, with some mention of his work inspecting or supervising the construction of roads, bridges, buildings, lighthouses, and the harbour and defences of Singapore. They also briefly describe his appointment as president of a commission set up in 1890-91 to advise upon the supply of labour. The letters from 1891 narrate a visit to China and Japan (circa 250 sheets).

Scope and Contents 62 x 88 mm. Showing the statue of Captain Francis Light (1740-1794), founder of Prince of Wales Island (Penang) in 1786. Light died of malaria on the island and was buried in the old Protestant Cemetery in Northam Road, George Town. The bronze statue designed by Frederick J. Wilcoxson, was originally sited in Fort Cornwallis and was unveiled in 1939. It was removed during the Japanese occupation and re-erected in 1946 in front of the High Court in Light Street. Much of the volume is concerned with Brown's involvement with the Legislative Council. There are articles regarding his disputed nomination by the Penang Chamber of Commerce in 1893, and his appointment to the Council in 1894 and 1897. There is also extensive coverage of the Council’s work, including newscuttings on the passage of bills regarding harbours, Indian immigration, liquor, opium...

272 x 206 mm. A view looking along Beach Street which runs NE-SW parallel to the waterfront and behind Victoria Street and Weld Quay. In the right foreground a three storey building houses G. Izolphe's hairdressing saloon, the Grand Hotel, the Pilots Club and Abdoul Sanat, watch-makers; these premises were later taken over by Kennedy and Co. Further down the street are the offices of the Pinang Gazette press, which in the left foreground are the Criterion Tiffin and Billiard Rooms.
