Kling women, Alma Estate, P[rovince ?] Wellesley, 1881 - 1920
Scope and Contents
237 x 183 mm. A carefully posed study of five Kling women grouped in front of the whitewashed wall of a European house. The Klings (the term has since the turn of the century been considered highly deregoratory) were the Tamil immigrants who formed the lowest classes of labour. The women in this picture wear saris and the characteristic toe and nose rings. The Alma Estate, situated some seven miles from Prye, originally consisted of some 500 acres planted out by a Mr Wilson during the Crimean War. It was acquired by Leopold and Emile Chasseriau during the 1890s and by 108 comprised 3000 acres containing 800 acres under tapioca, 60,000 rubber trees and 30,000 coconut trees. The largest proportion of the workforce at this period was Tamil.
