The photographs are mostly family portraits and albumen print cartes de visite of leading individuals in South Africa during his time. The backmark reads; 'Stewart and Co, 217 Bourke Street East, near Parliament Houses, Melbourne. A large framed copy of this portrait may be had price 20. Views taken within twenty miles of town'.

Exhibition Building, 1885 - 1901

199 x 140 mm. A view looking across the lake in Carlton Gardens to the Exhibition Buildings, with a central arched entrance which has behind it a large dome. Built in 1879-80 for the International Exhibition, it was the central landmark of the city for many years. Designed by Joseph Reed, the building cost £246,000 and contained 22 acres of floor space.

145 x 198 mm. A view of this elaborate hotel which stands at the corner of King Street and Collins Street, and was built in the early 1880s at the height of the construction boom. The façade of the building shows a bewildering extravagance of decoration and mixed architectural styles.
