A view looking down Oxford Street, which runs south-east from Hyde Park, showing the busy commercial street, with pedestrians, a stage coach and a steam tram (an amazing contraption towing a double-decker passenger car. These were introduced in 1879 when it was decided that the old horse-drawn trams, with their raised lines, impeded other traffic. By the end of the century Sydney had 100 miles of tramways).

280 x 225 mm. A three-quarter front view of the east front of the main building, with the Great Hall on the right. Built in Gothic style, the buildings were designed by Edmund Blacket and started in 1854. The word 'unfinished' in the caption is unclear, or may refer to another part of the University. These particular buildings were completed around 1860.

340 x 262 mm. A view of the entrance to Petersham Station from the road outside. This brick building with stone facings is dated 1885 above the main doorway. Petersham, on the suburban line to Parramatta, was on the first route to be opened in September 1855 and this plate shows the new station built on the same site.
