Scope and Contents From the Sub-Fonds: Fifty-three undated watercolours intended as bookmarks, each 200 x 45 mm in size, sold by John Sands of Sydney as indicated by stickers pasted onto the reverse. The images are of birds, with the exception of two koala bears, two kangaroos and one opossum. The vast majority are the work of three authors, signed Artah, M. Simpson and Koddi. Artah is Violet Artah Bartlett, an artist specialising in Australian ornithology who worked in Sydney during the 1920s. It has proved impossible as yet...

A view looking seawards past the obelisk which marks Captain Cook's landing place in 1770; with a jetty projecting out in to the bay. Kurnell lies on the Kurnell Peninsula, which forms the southern headland enclosing Botany Bay.

Admiral La Perouse’s voyage, inspired by that of Captain Cook and at the instigation of Louis XVI, probably had as one of its motives the annexation of any parts of Australia not already claimed by the British. After sailing through parts of the Pacific he made a camp at Botany Bay in January 1788. He left Australia in March of that year and no more was heard of the expedition until 1826 when remains were found at...

Lady Macquaries Chair-Sydney Harbour, 1888 - 1889

210 x 155 mm. A view of the large block of sandstone, with carved steps and a carved inscription, with Farm Cove partly visible at the left of the picture. The carving was done in 1816 so that the Governor’s wife could rest and look across the harbour on the walk back from the town to Government House.

Lansdowne Bridge, 1885

244 x 255 mm. A three-quarter front view of the fine stone bridge with one arch of 150 foot span. Designed and built by David Lennox in 1834-5, it was opened to traffic in 1836, and is still in use. The bridge crosses Prospect Creek near Liverpool. Sir T.L. Mitchell's name is printed at the corner of the page.
