La Perouse Monument, Botany Bay, 1870 - 1880
Scope and Contents
213 x 149 mm. A view looking out to sea with the monument in the foreground. Admiral La Perouse’s voyage, inspired by that of Captain Cook and at the instigation of Louis XVI, probably had as one of its motives the annexation of any parts of Australia not already claimed by the British. After sailing through parts of the Pacific he made a camp at Botany Bay in January 1788. He left Australia in March of that year and no more was heard of the expedition until 1826 when remains were found at Vanikovo, part of the Santa Cruz group. No survivors ever returned from the shipwreck which was assumed to have taken place in 1788.
